Checklist for building DIY speakers

We do not offer to send the kit instructions in advance.

Please read about the reasons why below:

  1. For drivers and Hypex amps, as well as for crossover components, there is always a possibility of minor discrepancies and tolerances relating to sizing/dimensions. We highly recommend that you wait with cutting out holes for the drivers, Hypex amps, ports. etc. until you have received all the DIY kit parts from us.
Then check and measure if everything will fit correctly before doing the cutouts.
  2. Before securing the crossover components in place with glue / zip ties and doing the point to point soldering of the crossovers, we highly recommend making a mock-up of the placement of all the components to make sure you keep proper distance between the crossover components (mainly important for coils). This way you ensure that the distancing and the overall room on the crossover boards will work out.
We also recommend measuring the crossover boards to make sure they will fit inside the cabinets, sizes for the crossover boards are mentioned in the kit instructions, but if you do not stick to those dimensions it is even more important to measure if the boards will fit before finishing them.
  3. If you want to make a ground connection for the solder tag strips on the crossovers a great solution is to buy a piece of regular solid core installation cable of 15-16 AWG gauge and strip the insulation off. This can be found at any well equipped hardware store or online.
  4. Before cutting the damping materials and bitumen panels to size, make sure that you are placing it where it is meant to be placed as to Mr. Gravesen’s specifications. There is no need to over dampen cabinets and in many cases certain smaller parts of the cabinets can be left without bitumen as it will not affect the resonance lowering to do so.

When working with bitumen panels, it is a good idea to leave them on a hot radiator or to gently heat them up with a hot air gun or hairdryer before gluing it in place in the cabinets. Heating them up till make them much more pliable and easier to work with.
We also recommend using additional glue (for example flooring or carpeting glue) in addition to the self adhesive glue that the bitumen panels come with as this glue will likely not suffice on its own.

  5. We recommend gathering up a “tool box”, including a good soldering iron station, soldering tin, and various tools you may need for the cabinet building. Unless your cabinets are done via CNC work, a router guide / router jig is a must have for making precision cutouts for drivers and bass reflex ports. A router guide/jig can be found online for various router brands or as universal models.
  6. Before sending an email asking for technical assistance, kindly make sure you have read the entire design article thoroughly and that you have checked Mr. Gravesen’s “tips” sections, linked below:
